  • I think this is a perfect time to invite Bryan from Asperger Syndrome Awareness Page to come and provide us with scientific data to support his key claims:
    1) He claims cannabis does not treat autism. Proof please?
    2) He claims Risperidone is effective in treating autism. Proof please?
    3) He claims Risperidone is safe and has no risks or side effects. Proof please?
    4) He claims cannabis is dangerous and has serious risks to mental and physical health. Proof please?

Again my point is you need to speak with a professional before making and decision to help symptom management of any illness or disease. • Oliver Stieber Antipsychotics are quite frankly the chemotherapy equivilent for mental health issues (except you have to take them....for ever since they cure nothing).'They' do use them to help with 'irratability' (but I'm sure a bullet in the head would also solve that problem) but are licensed for nothing else related to Aspergers and NICE guidelines says they must not be used to treat the core symptoms of Autistic spectrum disorders. The side effects are so bad that they have exceptionally high dropout rates (even in clinical trials) and some of them are irreversble and have dier consequences on health and life expectancy. Issues with cognative function (or lack of) may also go unnotice by the patient and Dr esp as they are hard to spot and well.... if you ain't thinking properly, your possibly not able to recoginse that.Upregulation and supersensitivity from using antipsychotics results in withdrawl which can also be devistating and is not limited to full blown psychosis, this is perticually common if you have other side effects and worsening of origional condition or new conditions during withdrawl can result in dependency on the drug to prevent them rom occuring. Drug addiction/seeking or desire (that is to other drugs such as amphetaimes) has also been demonstrated and widly theorised about.

      • Oliver Stieber some of them actually have psycosis listed as a side effect (when you are on them). neuroleptic induced dompanine supersensitivity is the umbrealla term. (though some researchers &co. use a different one, so as not to implicate neuroleptics... (neuroleptic is another name for antipsychotic). clorazipine is a good one to look at for rapid withdrawl side effects (since it's one they will rapidly take people off in hospital where they can actually see what happens as opposed to at home where they don't)..... the reason they rapidly withdraw people from it is because it has a 1 in 100 chance of causing life threatening white blood cell drop (basically a bit like a bad case of AIDS)

Risperidone, does work for my son so far is the only thing they have tried that has, but most certainly is not safe, it comes with a great deal of side effects, some of which are dangerous. My son has to get blood work done at least once a year to make sure it isn't causing health problems.

Luckily I caught it quick and it wasn't permanent. His claims are not supported by the evidence so why let him get to you? He's wrong, and it is easy enough to show evidence of that, but if he fears cannabis he won't see the evidence. Society was trained to fear cannabis.

I let him live with his father because I can't physically retrain him. We have had doctors and teachers who have said he needs to be on something like risperdal and Ritalin. I don't think so the side effects are so awful. His father and I both believe cannabis can help and is 100 times safer than the drugs the doctor's want to prescribe:)

      • Lisa Lawlor Cross My heart goes out to you Amber. My son is 5 and already when it is bath time (he hates baths) I have to struggle with him carrying him up the stairs while he's flailing his arms and legs all over the place, arching his body, holding onto anything he can. Holding onto the door posts so I have to prise his hands off. It has become a regular thing so I've talked him into having what I call a 'basin bath' strip wash to you and I. He can not stand his hair washed etc. It is becoming a bit of a nightmare for me. Have you thought that maybe school could be affecting your son, only school is sooo not designed for Autistic/Asperger children. Home schooling is the best. I'm very very lucky with my son's school, they are extremely supportive, but, if I think that he's finding school difficult then I will pull him out. It's really great that your son's Father is very supportive. My son's Father (my ex) is also very supportive. I worry how I will be able to cope with his meltdowns when he get's bigger. I also have an NT son who is 24. So I've been through the trials and tribulations already of bringing up one son. Stick to your guns about keeping him off of all pharma drugs. My partner whom I'm with now was on Risperidone. I wrote another post about him on this page somewhere, or if it's not on this page then it was on Cannabis for Autism's baby page lol

He had a nightmare time on them and when he decided to take himself off them, it was the withdrawal that actually caused his psychotic break. He was committed to hospital and was in there for a few months. The Risperidone and then other drugs pumped into him while he was in the hospital, made him REALLY ill and wreaked his body. It has taken a year for his body to get back to almost normal and he's now going to study for a PhD in psychology, science and some other stuff I haven't got a clue about. He has Aspergers with ADHD but was wrongly diagnosed by a psychiatrist as having schizophrenia, then they changed it to schizoeffective disorder. He had neither, just Aspergers with ADHD He's now completely drug free, oh except for tobacco, as he smokes".

It is definitely not the cure all it is made out to be by the pro lobby, and my experience is that it made my AS worse so far as anxiety and paranoia were concerned. I've no experience of Risperidone so can't comment on that. Not scientific proof but then where is the scientific proof that it is beneficial? Oh no, don't tell me, the pharmaceutical companies are suppressing it, of course.

I feel you guys are making unfair judgments on me based on what a page has claimed I have said. I have disproved of promoting Cannabis on a family-friendly page, and there is nothing wrong with that. I do not disagree with Cannabis as a whole, but the use of promoting it to children is unacceptable. Facebook has the option to change settings to 18+ or whichever group you'd prefer, and so pages who wish to promote Cannabis, feel free to continue to do so. I believe everything has been blown out of proportion, and that I am now being targeted unfairly by a group of people that has never met me, or had a conversation with me in my life. Please refrain from judging me unless you actually know me. I have a page on Facebook with over 50,000 fans. Fellow Aspies please use your logic, and explain how we could possibly reach that level without doing a good job and putting in a decent effort. Perhaps there are some things I need to learn about Cannabis that I do not currently know, but to be targeted like this is actually bullying. I have Asperger Syndrome myself, and I feel individuals should perhaps find a way to find non-medicated ways to be happy first before resulting in taking any kind of drug. If this does not work, and Cannabis is your thing, go ahead and do whatever makes you happy. By this page's comments it's obvious they are purposely trying to bring me down and display me in a negative light. I am not your enemy. You are telling me to learn all the facts. I am willing to, but you guys are not learning all the facts about me, and are deciding to make random judgments and accusations about my character without knowing one thing about me. That is not Aspie-like in the slightest.

I think a better knowledge of controlled dosing with herb that's "fine tuned" for Autism, would make it a lot less likely to have negative side effects. Some herb isn't suitable for human consumption. Here's a story about the psychosis effects mentioned earlier. Like I said, it depends on what you're smoking:

    • Jamie Bess Beckman Ok I am weighing in on this one...first I am a mother of a son with high functioning autism and have been a psychiatric nurse for the past 13 yrs. I think if you want to use marijuana for anything then please do. But do not go to your psychiatrist or PCP and tell them you need another drug for you anxiety, demotivation, depression, lack of memory, weight gain, or even psychosis because yes marijuana just happens to be a hallucinogen. Also just so happens that it is not FDA approved for any medical use. I agree making a decision about medication can be a difficult one but one that enhances a life and not to be used as a straight jacket.

I have seen many young people come into our office and have very severe psychiatric symptoms because of their cannabis use. If it was my son or daughter I would think long and hard before making any decision to add any medication, but do speak with someone that is a professional in the area of autism before making any decision. Again let us remember cannabis is NOT FDA approved for anything. Thank you!

Cannabis does not cause mental illness but bullying people because they use cannabis does cause mental illness. Are you sure it's not the societal
bullying that caused their issues? Did they drink alcohol and coffee too?

OH, and the FDA managed to take the most dangerous cannabinoid in cannabis, THC, and turn it into a pill, it's called MARINOL, now PROVE you can actually research facts by telling us what Marinol is FDA approved for.

        Thank YOU.

PS. The FDA refuse to converse with me because they can't win. Go call them over, I'll take 'em. NIDA too.

    • DeAnna Smith As a nurse myself, Ive given FDA approved Marinol to patients it was prescribed for.  mj is becoming legal for medical use in more and more areas and for more and more illnesses, disorders, and diseases. It comes in various forms, sublingual drops, nasal spray, chewables, edible products as well as the traditional smokable form. There are various strains genetically designed to relieve specific symptoms, and although THAT may not be FDA approved, daytime tv isnt riddled with lawsuit commercials regarding its horrific side effects either. Its just one of many medicinal plants that have been used for thousands of years that have fallen at the waist side to dangerous manmade chemicals that can have serious side effects, cause suicidal ideations, liver and renal failure, and even death. Even over the counter products such as acetaminophen  so please do your research, and dont judge those that seek a more natural and safer alternative to the laundry list of antipsychotics, antidepressants, anti anxiety, stimulants etc they start treating children as young as 3 with.

      • Cannabis for Autism No, it's for autistic children too. And we are calling for RESEARCH not 'we want to give joints to kids'.

Stop being obtuse and assuming evil intent.

      • Cannabis for Autism Ashley I don't recommend drugs for anxiety, I recommend ashtanga yoga and gardening.
        Always try yoga before drugs.
P.S. where in the autism diagnosis does it say 'anxiety'?

We are talking about medicine for core-symptoms, not co-morbid conditions.

    • Shiloh Schwab Why call someone out like that for having their own opinion? That's the great thing about having a mind, everyone gets to decide for themselves

      • Cannabis for Autism Because his opinions are a threat to our mission.

Isn't that obvious? Everyone can have their own opinions, but when your opinions are put out to 50,000 people and get in the way of someone's hard-earned facts, you can expect the fact-holder to take action.

      • Cannabis for Autism Any journalist who gets in the way of our mission gets the same treatment. We are not picking on anyone in particular.
All he has to do is change sides and he's winning.

This blog was created after an ironic censorship threat was made on a blog called 'Silenced by Age of Autism'. Naturally, we couldn't resist. If you haven't upset the aesthetics or if I can rescue the situation, you will never have your comments deleted. I will try to answer all questions. Some of the topics covered in this blog may seem unusual or frightening. That's the beauty of Aghori ;)
